# Create news categories

You can assign news items to a category. Using such a news category, visitors can easily filter the news items on your platform.

By default, there are 3 categories in your project, these are: Blog, Calendar and News: Blog, Calendar and News. You can add extra categories or change existing ones.

||| If you already have a news category and want to edit them, click the **Edit** icon. Then follow the steps from step 4.

1.  Open the **Advanced** item in the menu on the left side of the screen.    
2.  Then choose the sub-item **News categories**.    
3.  Click on the **New** icon to add a category.

4.  In the Name section, enter the name of the category.
5.  In the Icon section, enter the code for your icon.

* Here you will find more information about using Font Awesome.   
6.  If you want to use the category as a filter on your platform, activate the Use as filter button. If not, then turn it off.    
* The filter button will only appear on your platform if you have at least two news items in two different categories.          
7.  Click on the button **Save** at the top right.    
8.  Your news category is now added.
